About Us

Mission

Our mission is to encourage the study of French culture and language, and foster cultural, intellectual, artistic, and friendly exchanges between the French-speaking world and our local community. We are a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and your membership and donations are tax-deductible.

We are thankful to the SCFD for supporting our local non-profit organization.

History

The Alliance Française is a worldwide non-profit, cultural and educational center founded in Paris in 1883. It is the world’s largest cultural network with over 800 chapters in 132 countries, serving over 500,000 students.

The Alliance Française organization has 107 locations in the United States alone, which makes it the largest network of Alliances Françaises in the world, is serving 24,000 students (more than 48,000 enrolled) annually. Our Denver branch, the Alliance Française de Denver (AFD) was founded in 1897 and is one of the oldest non-profit organizations in the Denver-Metro area. It is also the only wholly French language, culture, and resource center in Colorado. As part of this world-wide effort, the AFD is proud to promote the integration of diverse cultures within the Denver community.

Benefits

The Alliance Française de Denver offers continued learning both in and out of the classroom, through a variety of cultural and social events, to more than 1400 members as well as to the general public. AFD‘s events include lectures, art exhibits, film showcases, wine tastings, traditional celebrations, and cooking classes. We provide convenient language classes throughout the year, either during the day or in the evening, or on weekends. All classes are taught by native or fluent French  speakers. Additional resources are also available free of charge to our members. Finally, the AFD’s library is home to over 5,500 books, films and audio materials to aid in the learning process both linguistically and culturally.

It is our policy to follow practices of non-discrimination relating to race, creed, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, marital status, gender expression, sexual orientation, age, physical disability, veteran status, or political service or affiliation.

Our Programs

The AFD‘s language school is a member of the Alliance Française network and offers language classes and programs for adults and children. Our cultural programming showcases many local events and our library and Culturethèque house the largest collection of French books, periodicals, DVDs, and CDs available in the Rocky Mountain region.

Meet Our Executive Director

Martin Lafitte, Executive Director

Martin arrived in Denver in September 2015 to take over Philippe Marsé as Director of Alliance Française de Denver. After a BA in Japanese Studies in INALCO, Martin chose to specialize in teaching French as a Foreign Language and obtained a Master’s Degree of Didactics of French as a Foreign Language from the University Paris 7 Denis Diderot.

Bonjour ! I spent the last seven years working abroad in the education and cultural fields in various countries such as Japan or Jersey in the Channel Islands. I am now very excited to be for the first time in the USA and especially in such a beautiful place as Colorado! I am really delighted to take over Philippe’s position and take up the challenge of expanding the Francophonie and Francophilie in the Denver area. I am passionate about French language and culture, and can’t wait to share that with you! Don’t hesitate to come and meet me at our offices on Galapago Street. My door is always open!

Board of Directors

The Alliance Française de Denver is grateful to our dedicated supporters and advisors from the local business, academic and cultural community. Our Board of Trustees consists of both French and American members who are actively involved in AFD's growth. We thank you for your vision and your support!
