Journey to the Land of Words - B2+ (5 weeks) - 6:00-7:00 p.m.

This class is designed for students at the B2 level and above (Upper Intermediate and Advanced).   The objective is to search, inquire into, discuss and have fun, exploring the multilayered meanings of words.  On the first day of class, we will generate a list of students’ favorite abstract words.

For each class, students will select one of these words and search its definition in a French-only dictionary such as Le Larousse, Le Robert, Le Trésor de la langue française informatisé, or  Le  Dictionnaire de l’Académie française.

As we explore the multiple facets of a word, we will look at its origin (Latin, Old French, Anglo-Saxon, etc.), its literal and figurative meanings, its synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, etc.  Citations by authors and thinkers of times past illustrating the use of such words will also be of interest.  Finally, each student will be invited to write one sentence using the word in question.

Please note: This class entails some homework and will be taught entirely in French.
