Champagne Charlie Event

Date: 10 Nov 2022, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm (GMT-07:00) Mountain Time (US & Canada

Did you know that Denver is a key part of the story of how Frenchman, Charles Heidsieck popularized Champagne in America? Authors Don and Petie Kladstrup are in Denver to share this fascinating history, part of their book, Champagne Charlie: The Frenchman Who Taught Americans to Love Champagne.

After starting his own Champagne business in France at the age of 29, Charles Heidsieck first arrived in the United States in 1852.  He saw potential in the American market and began the mass importation of champagne, to incredible success.  The persona of “Champagne Charlie” really emerged after his 1857 return visit, however, which was met with substantial fanfare – solidifying his position in the New York social scene.  By 1863, Heidsieck was offered deeds to land in Colorado as repayment for one of his unpaid New York accounts. The land was in fact a significant portion of Denver. Heidsieck was able to sell the land and repay his debts. With the excess fortune he was able to relaunch his Champagne business.

The Tattered Cover in McGregor Square will host this unique presentation and book signing - complete with champagne, and have books for sale. The event is a fundraiser for Historic Denver and Alliance Française. Your event ticket ($25 for members / $30 for non-members) grants you access to the presentation by the authors and 1 drink ticket.

WHAT OUR MEMBERS ARE SAYING

I'd like to start this off by thanking you for teaching me so much French. You were a great teacher and you helped me learn so many new things. I'd also like to apologize for missing a lot of lessons, although I'm sure that I would've rather gone to them. Again, you are the best teacher I've ever had, and it's sad to say goodbye to you.

Alliance Française de Denver created a wonderful virtual environment where I spent my Summer vacation; visiting the winemaking area of Bouzy; celebrating Bastille Day; learning how to cook with flowers; touring historic châteaux and beautiful villages; all in the safety and comfort of my home.

A real treat for any Francophone person; especially having a daily place for French chat to try out and maintain colloquial skills.

Anne is fantastic! The material is fast paced for this "old dog" to learn new tricks, but we could not go slower. It has been very helpful to prepare me for my trip to France.

A great place to learn and practice French while getting acquainted with French culture and interesting people. I definitely recommend AFD and their events. Je parle français! Et vous?
