A1 Review

Foundation
This class is designed for students who have completed A1.3 or higher (the equivalent of approximately 80 hours of French study). It is ideal for those looking to brush-up after a break from French, or wanting support before moving up a level.

A1 review will cover foundational topics in elementary French. This includes gender of nouns, present tense of major irregular verbs, passé composé and imparfait, and futur simple. Students will practice speaking on basic topics familiar to them, reading documents at an A1 or low-A2 level, and listening to documents based on basic, everyday conversations.

Fast Track A1.2 6:00-8:30 p.m.

Fast Track

This is a hybrid class; Mondays will take place in-person at Downing street. Wednesday classes will happen online via Zoom. 

Fast Track A1.2 is designed for students who have completed A1.1 (101) or for false beginners.. The emphasis in French A1.2 (102) is on basic conversational skills.  After having successfully completed French A1.2, you will be able to ask and answer questions, such as “Where are you from?” “Where do you live?” “What do you like to do on weekends?”  You will be able to describe people and places, and explain basic hopes and opinions.

REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS:  Cosmopolite 1 (textbook and workbook), which will be used in each class of the A1 level (A1.1, A1.2, A1.3, and A1.4). In French A1.1, Dossiers 3 and 4 will be covered.

A2 Review

Foundation
This course is for people who have finished A2.3, or approximately 200 hours of French study. It is ideal for someone looking to brush up after a break from French or wanting support before moving to the next level. 

In A2 review, students will examine major topics of A2 language. This includes a lengthier discussion on passé composé and imparfait and appropriate tense shifting within a narrative. Students will also work on improving variety in their descriptive language using adverbs, prepositions, object and relative pronouns, and more.

Conversation

Les “casse-croutes” de l’Alliance Francaise de Denver – Special Lunch Time Conversation Program BYOCC! (Bring Your Own Casse-Croûte !) From the literal translation to “break the crust” (as in breaking bread), the Casse-Croûte is a light meal shared between friends, colleagues, and family; a French version of a brown-bag lunch. Join us for a lively conversation based on current events/a magazine article/news, etc. related to your level of French. Conversations will be facilitated by the teacher who will prepare something different for each session. No textbook is needed for this class.

B1/B2 Review

Foundation
This class is for students who have completed B1.4 (approximately 300 hours of French study). This is an advanced level class, and is recommended for students with a significant French background, that they perhaps haven't used in some time (previously lived in France, French major/minor, etc.)

In this class, students will review B1 and B2 level topics, based on the interests and needs of the students in the class. This can include (but is not limited to) use of the conditional and subjunctive modes, effective use of passive voice, hypothetical phrases with "si", demonstrative pronouns, and indirect speech. Students will practice speaking and writing in the contexts of both everyday life and of more complex themes, such as current events, using written and audio documents.

Each week students will read and analyze a particular cultural topic of conversation, learn new vocabulary by doing a variety of interesting exercises, discuss the content, and listen to or watch short clips to improve their understanding of French.

Calling all artists! If you are looking to stretch your creative muscles and improve your French, this is the class for you. This is an interactive class, where students will practice drawing based on various themes related to the Normandy region. By the end of the class, students will learn new art techniques, as well as ways to talk about their art in French.

This class will be entirely in French. It is recommended for strong B1 students and above. The teacher will send an email with needed materials 2 weeks before the start of the class.

In this workshop, we will discover some of the most extraordinary castles in France.  We will learn about and discuss their architecture, strategic geographic location, history, Kings and Queens, among other topics.  This course is designed for students at the intermediate to advanced level of French (B1 and above). In this class, students will practice confident and fluid language, in the context of complex topics such as controversial current issues (effects of AI, what subjects should be taught in schools, pollution, etc.). Some grammar topics will be planned in advance, but grammar will be reviewed as issues arise with students in the context of improving flow and clarity.
