About the Alliance Française de Denver

Our History

The Alliance Française is a worldwide non-profit, cultural and educational center founded in Paris in 1883. It is the world’s largest cultural network with over 800 chapters in 132 countries, serving over 500,000 students.

The Alliance Française organization has 107 locations in the United States alone, which makes it the largest network of Alliances Françaises in the world, is serving 24,000 students (more than 48,000 enrolled) annually.

Our Denver branch, the Alliance Française de Denver (AFD) was founded in 1897 and is one of the oldest non-profit organizations in the Denver-Metro area. It is also the only wholly French language, culture, and resource center in Colorado. As part of this world-wide effort, the AFD is proud to promote the integration of diverse cultures within the Denver community.

Our Benefits

The Alliance Française de Denver provides opportunities for continued learning both inside and outside the classroom through a wide variety of cultural and social events. We proudly serve more than 600 members, as well as the general public.

Our events include lectures, art exhibitions, film screenings, wine tastings, traditional celebrations, and cooking workshops. We also offer convenient French language classes year-round, with options during the day, evenings, and weekends — all taught by native or fluent French speakers. Members also enjoy free access to additional learning resources.

The AFD’s library houses more than 5,500 books, films, and audio materials to support both linguistic and cultural learning.

We are committed to maintaining a welcoming, inclusive environment and follow a policy of non-discrimination on the basis of race, creed, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, marital status, gender expression, sexual orientation, age, physical ability, veteran status, or political affiliation.

Our Programs

The Alliance Française de Denver’s language school is part of the global Alliance Française network and offers French classes and programs for both adults and children. Our cultural programming features a wide range of local events, and our library — along with Culturethèque — offers the largest collection of French books, magazines, DVDs, and CDs available in the Rocky Mountain region.

Our Mission

Our mission is to promote the study of the French language and Francophone cultures, while fostering cultural, intellectual, artistic, and social exchanges between the French-speaking world and our local community.

We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and your membership and donations are tax-deductible.

What our members are saying about us

"I'd like to start this off by thanking you for teaching me so much French. You were a great teacher and you helped me learn so many new things. I'd also like to apologize for missing a lot of lessons, although I'm sure that I would've rather gone to them. Again, you are the best teacher I've ever had, and it's sad to say goodbye to you."

"Alliance Française de Denver created a wonderful virtual environment where I spent my Summer vacation; visiting the winemaking area of Bouzy; celebrating Bastille Day; learning how to cook with flowers; touring historic châteaux and beautiful villages; all in the safety and comfort of my home.

A real treat for any Francophone person; especially having a daily place for French chat to try out and maintain colloquial skills."

"Anne is fantastic! The material is fast paced for this "old dog" to learn new tricks, but we could not go slower. It has been very helpful to prepare me for my trip to France."

"A great place to learn and practice French while getting acquainted with French culture and interesting people. I definitely recommend AFD and their events. Je parle français! Et vous?"
