Artist Statement:

"For this show, I wanted to express my love of the human body and the emotions that it can convey to the viewers. I used to paint in a figurative way before I moved to non-representative abstract five years ago, so these past few months I have endeavored to explore again body shapes and volumes from the perspective of Abstract Expressionism. All of the human bodies displayed in this show were sketched from live models. My intention was to capture motions and emotions of poses, and to nurture my art-making process with the shapes and marks that intuitively and quickly came to mind.

In my process, I build from the bottom to the top, playing with different textures through the use of acrylic paint, charcoal, graphite, pastel, oil stick, ink, markers and other media such as collages of painted rice paper, sketches on paper, magazines and newspapers. My marks can be bold or timid, rough or smooth, often reminiscent of scars on a body. I do not choose the composition first- instead I allow myself to be led by the colors, and for this show, they are the warmest and earthiest types of colors in order to support this idea of human bodies. When the mark-making and collage processes become too chaotic, I pay more attention to the composition and the elements of design, trying to calm the overabundance of energy I laid on the canvas or on the wood panel. Thinking about what I like the most, what speaks to me strongly and what I want to keep hidden like the buried secrets we all have, I keep working... Throughout this process and playing with the transparency, I like to guess about the layers underneath for more depth, and allow different stories to emerge depending on how far the viewer is. I like to imagine people exploring the entire surface of the piece and letting their imagination fly everywhere, like rediscovering every detail of the body of their loved one. Ultimately, my goal is to obtain a true expression of myself that is energetic and bright, and hopefully an esthetically pleasing piece where the eyes can wander and always find new details. It is like the piece has its own story, with bad and good memories and we can all start having a discussion about it…"

About the Artist:

Emmanuelle Auzias was born in Marseille, France, and has spent her life conversing between cultures due to my parents’ different origins. Her father was born in Corsica, a rugged, wild island in the Mediterranean Sea, while her mother was from the cool, lofty Swiss Alps. After a first high education curriculum in Computer Sciences and several years occupying Engineer positions in France, she returned to college and graduated in 2007 from French Universities with a major in Psychology since she is passionate about the human brain and its impact on our behavior. It was around that time that she started studying Art. At first, painting was more of a way to relax and escape the stress of her everyday busy life and she focused on figurative paintings of the human body, inspired by her love of contemporary dance. However, as the months and years passed, it slowly became a passion and a way to express herself and her creativity. She has always had this creative side to her personality which took different forms all along her life such as dance, singing, sculpting and then painting. Ultimately, it was when she moved from the South of France to Denver, Colorado in 2012, that she was finally able to fully bring out this artistic side of her personality. She could free her mind and devote herself to Art making as a way to express her emotions and communicate with others through art. For her, this could only be done through Abstract Art, so she started learning at the Art Student League of Denver and took also Art Therapy classes at the Colorado School for Family Therapy in order to link her psychology background to her art practice. Since 2015, she has had numerous collective and solo shows. She is currently represented by fooLPRoof Contemporary Art from Denver; in 2019, her work was displayed in the Chelsea Art District of New-York and at the New-York ArtExpo international Art Fair.

WHAT OUR MEMBERS ARE SAYING

Lir M.

I'd like to start this off by thanking you for teaching me so much French. You were a great teacher and you helped me learn so many new things. I'd also like to apologize for missing a lot of lessons, although I'm sure that I would've rather gone to them. Again, you are the best teacher I've ever had, and it's sad to say goodbye to you.

Alliance Française de Denver created a wonderful virtual environment where I spent my Summer vacation; visiting the winemaking area of Bouzy; celebrating Bastille Day; learning how to cook with flowers; touring historic châteaux and beautiful villages; all in the safety and comfort of my home.

A real treat for any Francophone person; especially having a daily place for French chat to try out and maintain colloquial skills.

Anne is fantastic! The material is fast paced for this "old dog" to learn new tricks, but we could not go slower. It has been very helpful to prepare me for my trip to France.

A great place to learn and practice French while getting acquainted with French culture and interesting people. I definitely recommend AFD and their events. Je parle français! Et vous?
