French Roots in Denver

The Alliance Française de Denver (AFD) was established in 1897 by Jean-Baptiste Mignolet, consul honoraire de France and the famous "unsinkable" Francophile and Denver socialite, Margaret "Molly" Brown. The mission of the organization is to encourage the study of French and Francophone cultures and language; and foster cultural, intellectual, artistic, and friendly exchanges between the French-speaking world and our local community. Over the span of three centuries, AFD has become a hub for other Francophone organizations in Denver, providing a space to hold their events and meetings.

Our Vision

Our vision is to be the "Center for All Things French in the Rocky Mountain region." Our organization is one of only a few Alliance Française organizations in the United States that owns its own facility. This acquisition was made possible by a very generous gift by the late Thomas Sutherland, a former Colorado State University professor who spent six years as a hostage in Beirut in the 1980s. We cherish our "maison" and strive to make this THE center for all Francophones and Francophiles in the region. Our goal is to extend the French language and culture in Denver, as well as share our building with other Francophone organizations like the American Association of Teachers of French, Denver Sister Cities - City of Brest committee, Alliance & Co. theater troupe, and French American Chamber of Commerce to name a few. Together, we can make Denver the hub for "all things French in the Rocky Mountain region."

126 Years of French Language and Culture For All

Since its inception in 1897, AFD has provided the city a window on French language and culture, offering events such as theater plays, concerts, diplomatic receptions, encounters with Francophone writers, and guest speaker series. In addition to world-renowned French artists, AFD has organized different spaces for discussion and discoveries - the "Café" series, including Café-Philo, Café Scientifique, and Café des Arts. French celebrations like La Fête de la Musique, Bastille Day, and Galette des Rois are popular and festive occasions. Not only does the AFD provide cultural events, it also hosts a library and multimedia center, providing members with access to a vast collection of French books, films, and music. Finally, AFD is an active member of the Santa Fe Art District and has hosted monthly art exhibits of local, national and international French artists.

The AFD's French language study program follows the Common European Framework (CEFR) standard of learning the French language. This immersion program is available for children and adults at all levels and proficiencies and is offered in-person and online based on our students' needs. In addition to providing classes for all in the region, the AFD has provided accredited training for high school French teachers, conducted by experts presenting new approaches to language teaching. We are also accredited to offer the DELF (Diplome d'etudes en langue francaise) and DALF (Diplome approfondi de langue francaise) exams for language proficiency, and students travel from different western states to take these exams.

Moving Forward

Moving on through the 21st century, AFD strives to provide a fully inclusive Francophone/Francophile community for Denver and the Rocky Mountain region. This facility will provide multi-purpose space for meetings, events, art exhibits, theater performances, and more to the community. Continue the 126-year tradition of providing French language instruction and culture to Francophones and Fracnophiles. Share our space with other Francophone/Francophile organizations to strengthen our relationships throughout the region.

Phase 1 - Estimated Wall Repairs

The first phase of this project is to demolish and rebuild the damaged north wall. This will include shoring up the damaged internal walls and roof, reinforcing foundation that dates back to the early 1900s, rebuilding the outside wall, adding a basement and elevator, and providing usable space for classrooms and offices while we prepare for Phase 2 - AFD Cultural Center. Our projected completion of Phase I is April 2024.

Phase 2 - Cultural Centers

Once the north wall is complete, AFD plans to undergo a major renovation - adding a multi-purpose performance space, upgraded classrooms, and new offices. This will transform the AFD into a thriving Francophone Cultural Center, providing a space for francophones and francophiles alike to connect and engage with French language and culture. The new renovations include: multi-purpose meeting areas/classrooms upstairs, large common area for theater productions and art exhibits, and new office space for our AFD staff and other organizations. Projected completion will be determined based on materials costs, labor availability and revenue resources. Our goal is to complete Phase 2 by late 2025.
