An Introduction to Impressionism with Artist Alanna Peters
Discover the vibrant world of French Impressionism and explore how artists like Monet, Renoir and Pissarro captured the fleeting beauty of light and atmosphere. Learn how Impressionism emerged from the French cultural and historical context of the time.
Join artist Alanna Peters in this hands-on painting workshop, in which you’ll explore expressive brushwork, Impressionists palette, and colour relationships. Learn to paint the feeling of a scene rather than simply its details, experiment with broken color, and discover how the Impressionists transformed the way we see the world.
Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced painter, this workshop is designed for all levels of painting ability. You’ll be guided through the process of creating your own small landscape inspired by the Impressionists.
The workshop will be taught in French, offering a wonderful opportunity to discover French art and culture, practise your conversational French, and create something beautiful along the way. All levels of French are welcome, so don’t worry if you’re still learning!

About the Artist
Alanna Peters
In her work, Alanna artist explores the interaction between the abstract qualities of the environment and the detailed realism of the human figure. Inspired by the concept of impermanence, she strives to freeze fleeting moments, creating a sense of stillness amid the constant change and noise of life. Her paintings invite viewers to remain present and discover peace within the chaos.
Often incorporating the female form in water, she works with oil paint on aluminum panels, focusing on how light and movement distort and interact with the body. Her compositions capture compelling polarities, juxtaposing intricate details of figures in lace or floral garments with the reflective, metaphysical qualities of water, while capturing weightlessness through illusions of transparency.
Fascinated by the figure and the shared beauty of our humanity, her paintings center on human connection—both to one another and to the surrounding world. Born in Ottawa, she currently splits her time between Toronto, Canada, and Denver, USA. She earned an Honours BA in Fine Arts from McMaster University in 2001 and a BEd in Arts-Based Learning from Queen's University in 2005. As a recognized artist, her work is held in private and public collections internationally.
