Book Club Intermediate B1+



Join us for our first Intermediate Book Club at the Alliance Francaise de Denver. This book club is designed for those who are looking to deepen their language skills while reading and discussing French Books. We invite all B1+ level members of the Alliance Francaise de Denver and interested in participating in discussions about French literature to join our intermediate level French Book Club! Whether you are a seasoned reader or new to French books, your insights are valuable to our conversations. Our upcoming meetings will focus on a selection of authors and books that will be easy to read yet will provoke engaging discussions. THIS IS NOT A FRENCH CLASS.
  
Objectives: 
 

  • Promote Language Skills: Encourage members to improve their French reading, speaking, and comprehension skills (*this is not a CLASS) 
  • Explore diverse Francophone authors  
  • Promote French discussion & cultural exchange: Create a welcoming environment for open discussions about characters and cultural context of the selected books 
  • Build a community of Francophile readers within the Alliance Française of Denver community  

Note: If you are a fluent French reader, you might consider the French Book Club for Fluent readers.

Selected Book: 

Meursault, contre-enquête – Kamel Daoud

Il est le frère de "l'Arabe" tué par un certain Meursault dont le crime est relaté dans un célèbre roman du XXe siècle. Soixante-dix ans après les faits, Haroun redonne un nom et une histoire à Moussa, mort par hasard sur une plage d'Alger trop ensoleillée.

Haroun est un vieil homme tourmenté par la frustration. Soir après soir, dans un bar d'Oran, le vieillard rumine sa solitude, sa colère contre les hommes qui ont tant besoin d'un dieu, son désarroi face à un pays qui l'a déçu. Étranger parmi les siens, il voudrait clore cette histoire et mourir enfin ...

Hommage en forme de contrepoint rendu à "L’Étranger" d'Albert Camus, "Meursault, contre-enquête" joue vertigineusement des doubles et des faux-semblants pour évoquer la question de l'identité. En appliquant cette réflexion à l’Algérie contemporaine, Kamel Daoud, connu pour ses articles polémiques, choisit cette fois la littérature pour traduire la complexité des héritages qui conditionnent le présent.
