Join us for an engaging cultural evening dedicated to Togo and its UNESCO heritage, the home country of our teacher Jean-Claude Hounou.

During this one-hour presentation, Jean-Claude will introduce participants to the rich history, cultural traditions, and UNESCO-recognized heritage of Togo, offering insight into the country’s identity, diversity, and place in West Africa. The talk will be followed by a Q&A session and refreshments, providing an opportunity for informal discussion.

The evening will continue with a presentation by Sandrine Ricote, who will share her experience volunteering in 2011 with Afrique Positive, an organization dedicated to supporting education and community initiatives in Africa. 

This event will be conducted entirely in French.

Speakers

Jean-Claude Hounou
Jean-Claude was born in Brazzaville, Congo, and graduated from high school in Togo. He taught high school in Lomé for 19 years as a court-certified interpreter, translator, and Baccalaureate examiner. He holds a Master’s in Linguistics, a BA in French with a Teaching License, and a Master’s in French Literature. In Denver, he has taught all levels of French, including university and IB students, and has been an AP Reader since 2016. Fluent in Lingala, Mina, and Ewe, he is known as “Monsieur Grammaire,” passionate about La Francophonie, and enjoys movies, travel, and soccer.
Sandrine Ricote
Sandrine Ricote is a research professor at Colorado School of Mines and is working on hydrogen production and energy-related topics. She is also volunteering in the association Afrique Positive. The volunteer members of the association (created in 2006) are implementing projects to support the education of children and young people in Africa. Sandrine volunteered in a program in December 2011 and has since sponsored children to attend school. In this overview of the association, you will learn about the projects and the ways to get involved.
