Art & French Conversation Workshop

Workshop

This monthly online workshop offers a unique opportunity to discuss a work of art in French and to be introduced to a simple drawing technique through the creation of a personal artwork — one piece per session.

Each session will focus on a different theme, allowing participants to register for the session(s) of their choice. No prior knowledge of art history or drawing is required.

Objectives:

  • Oral production: Emphasis on speaking skills through the exchange of viewpoints about a selected artwork, guided by reflective and thought-provoking questions.
  • Written production: Short written responses to questions posed during the session.
  • Listening comprehension: Understanding basic concepts of art history and drawing techniques explained in French.
  • Community building: Creating a welcoming space within AF for art-sensitive individuals to connect, express themselves freely, and relax.

For each session, participants will be informed in advance of the materials to prepare (e.g., pencils, markers, paper) to support their artistic production.

  • Audience: Adults with a minimum French level of B1+
  • Format: Online (Zoom or similar)
  • Frequency: Once a month, e.g., every second Thursday
  • Time: 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM (MST)
  • Group size: Limited number of participants of 8 to ensure everyone has time and space to express themselves

B2.3

Foundation

At the B2 level of language proficiency (according to the CEFR – Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), learners reach an upper-intermediate stage where they can function independently and effectively in most everyday and professional situations. Here are the key milestones typically achieved at the B2 level:

Communication & Comprehension

  • Can understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in their field of specialization.
  • Can follow extended speech and complex lines of argument in standard spoken language, even in lectures or debates.
  • Can interact with native speakers with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular conversation possible without strain for either party.

Speaking

  • Can express themselves clearly and in detail on a wide range of topics.
  • Can explain a viewpoint on a topical issue, giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
  • Can take an active part in discussion, defending their opinions and responding to others’ arguments effectively.

Writing

  • Can write clear, detailed texts on a wide range of subjects.
  • Can produce essays or reports that present arguments or viewpoints systematically, highlighting important points and supporting ideas.
  • Can write personal or professional correspondence, adjusting tone and register appropriately.

Grammar & Vocabulary

  • Has a good command of grammar with occasional slips that do not cause misunderstanding.
  • Can use a broad range of vocabulary, including idiomatic expressions and some nuanced language, especially in familiar contexts.
  • Can vary language to avoid repetition and express subtle shades of meaning.

Independence & Adaptability

  • Can function effectively in francophone environments, whether traveling, studying, or working.
  • Can adapt language use to different social and professional contexts.
  • Shows an ability to learn new vocabulary and expressions from context and incorporate them into conversation.

At the B2.3 level, students will examine the concept of work and its impact on society. The course will also explore themes related to the arts and the challenges of mastering the French language, fostering meaningful discussion and personal reflection. Current Events: Ripped from the Headlines

Conversation

This conversation course is designed for intermediate to advanced learners (B1 to C2). Each week, students engage in dynamic discussions on a variety of topics related to current events, culture, science, and economics. Themes are selected by the instructor and drawn from authentic French sources such as newspaper and magazine articles, podcasts, literary excerpts, and film clips. The course encourages open exchange of ideas in a supportive environment, with targeted attention to pronunciation and grammar as needed to enhance clarity and fluency.

Français dans le monde actuel B2+

Conversation

This in-person class is designed for students at the B2 Upper Intermediate level or higher or for students who have taken more than 650 hours of French. In this class, students will participate in enticing conversations about current events and culture pertaining to the French-speaking world (France, Belgium, West Africa, etc.).  Based on news videos and podcasts, they will engage in class discussions and defend their opinions.  Additionally, they will learn new idiomatic expressions, proverbs, as well as a plethora of linguistic subtleties.

Intermediate Conversation B1/B2

Conversation

In this conversational course B1/B2 level students will read & discuss a variety of topics, learn new vocabulary, and immerse themselves in different cultural aspects of the Francophone world. Through a variety of activities, including discussions and presentations, students will improve their grammar, vocabulary and overall fluency.

Intermediate Conversation through fun and games

Workshop
Learn and revisit your French while playing games! Learn and improve while having fun !

These sessions invite students to interact on unexpected/unknown thematics to allow spontaneity and rapid mind setting. In this course, we will focus on words and interactive games (taboo, guess a who, crosswords, etc.) to use conversational skills and challenge ourselves having fun. This new setting of learning aim to teach differently, in a playful way, to use the foundations learnings in a social setting, to learn with ease, to develop new linguistic competences and confidence, where everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate.

Tales and Legends

Workshop

Dive into the magical world of classic French tales with this monthly online workshop, centered around two stories by Charles Perrault: Little Red Riding Hood and Puss in Boots. Through these timeless narratives, we’ll explore the theme of animal personification, focusing on the symbolic roles of the wolf and the cat.

Each 2-hour session, held via Zoom, includes:

  • A guided discussion in French about the characters and deeper meanings within the stories
  • A creative activity inspired by the tales
  • A relaxed and engaging space for reflection and expression

Who is it for?

  • Adults with B1 to B2+ level in French
  • No prior knowledge of literature required

Workshop Goals:

  • Encourage oral expression through thoughtful conversation and interpretation
